Intel unveils new logo in brand overhaul
Intel said Thursday that it would scrap its 37-year-old logo as part of a major rebranding that will emphasize the chipmaker's shift away from its core PC business into consumer products.
The original Intel logo featuring a lowered "e" will be replaced with one showing an oval swirl surrounding the company's name.
The phrase "Leap ahead" will supplant "Intel inside," which helped bring the company into the public awareness during the PC boom of the 1990s.
The new Yonah mobile chips will also be called core, instead of Pentium M, and be designated Duo (for dual core models) and Solo (for single core models. Some of Intel's branding changes, such as the disappearance of the lowercase e
Intel said CEO Paul Otellini is set to unveil details of the campaign during next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Santa Clara, California-based company is rolling out the rebranding just weeks after it elevated Eric Kim to the role of Chief Marketing Officer.
Intel hired Kim away last year from Samsung, where he was credited with helping to forge a savvy consumer electronics brand to take on industry stalwarts such as Japan's Sony Corp.
"'Intel. Leap ahead.' is a simple expression that declares who we are and what we do. This is part of our heritage," Kim said in a statement.
The new marketing effort will phase out Intel's well-known Pentium brand and emphasize its Centrino line of laptop chips, upcoming PC and server processors, and a new effort called "Viiv" that aims to integrate PCs into home entertainment such as by recording TV shows and sending them to other devices

Yahoo Messenger with Voice (Beta
Yahoo Messenger with Voice (Beta)
Yes the Yahoo Messenger 7.5 Beta is available, complete "with Voice" ;)
All I can say is it looks very similar to Windows Live Messenger, from searching through your Yahoo Address Book to VOIP. I am liking the idea of giving your PC its own phone number a lot. Very very useful for on the road travellers and those who don't want a fixed landline phone number. Oh and they have free voicemail checking too!
Although its not a major client milestone, it looks like Yahoo are not scared of joining networks with MSN. Maybe I should switch to Y! MwV for a few weeks once the interoperability is up and running and really get to grips with using the client on a day to day basis. You never know what might happen, I could end up being the next Guillaume ;)
Update: I just had a poke around at the Phone In feature. OMG its sexy. Seriously, this is one of those features that makes people switch clients, and with interoperability just around the corner, that is something WLMessenger developers should be thinking about every single hour of the working day. (I'm actually having to hide my wallet so I don't signup for this service.) Can't understand why I'm making such a fuss? Imagine:
UK citizen having a USA number ($2.50 a month) + Free mobile phone minutes for people living in USA = International calls for $2.50 a month

Windows Vista to RTM in July?
Windows Vista to RTM in July?
If Windows Vista heads to OEMs on July 25th, 2006, then I’m responsible. I, like many Microsoft employees, am running new Windows Vista builds whenever I get the chance. And I’m submitting bugs as I find them. Heck… most of the time I’m submitting bugs I don’t even KNOW I’m submitting bugs. (The system is WAY smart about sending back information when things stop, hang, crash, or even faintly hiccup.)
But according to http://www.thehotfix.net/ and others, unofficially (and as yet unconfirmed by Microsoft as far as I know), July 25th is when Windows Vista will be available to OEMs so they can start testing and building systems in time for the 2006 Holiday season.
I'm currently playing with 5247. What build are you running?

Some WLM Beta tips and tricks
Ok here's some of the small things you might have missed that I hope will make your Messenger 8 experience that little bit better :)
With the contact list selected:
* Typing any character will cause the wordwheel feature to become active. So if you want to search for a contact, don't bother clicking the word wheel box, just start typing!
* Press "Alt S" to load your Shared Folders.
* Press "Alt M" to load your Inbox.
With a conversation window selected:
* If you want to hide/show display pictures in the conversation window, click the "To: Name Here
* If you have borderless mode enabled, remember you can press the Alt key to temporarily show the menus.
* If you want to share a file but want the recipient to receive it instantly (ie miss out the turn-based queue system) just drag the file into the text entry part of the conversation window and choose the option "Send the file through direct file transfer."
* In the conversation window, the keyboard shortcut "Alt N" now sends a nudge instead of loading the My Winks panel. That can now be loaded by "Alt W" :)
* The keyboard shorcut "Alt U" does not now start an audio conversation because of the new Windows Live Call integration. Use "Alt C C" for a Voice conversation.
* The keyboard shorcut "Alt O" does not now change your font but instead starts a Video conversation (changed from 7.0 to 7.5)
As always, this is only a beta, so the shortcut are subject to change.

Next Microsoft IM passes auctioned on eBay
Developers itching to test drive Microsoft's latest instant messenger can now bid for an invitation to join the test program on eBay. Some 70 invitations to the Windows Live Messenger 8 beta test program have been posted on eBay, with many sellers looking to make around $25.00 per invitation.
The beta program has been made available to a limited audience of private testers, although program participants have been issued with a number of invitations for friends, family or "the highest bidder." Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger team said the program's size was restricted to limit the hits on its back-end servers.

Nike pays $43 million to supply India's kit
Nike has signed a $43-million deal to kit out the Indian team after outbidding rivals Reebok and Adidas, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Friday.
The five-year contract, which starts on January 1, 2006, also gives Nike the rights to sell the BCCI's official merchandise at its retail outlets across the country.
Nike's bid for 1.97 billion rupees topped Reebok's offer of 1.19 billion rupees and Adidas's bid of 1.28 billion rupees, BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi said. "The aim was to maximise the gains from the game for the benefit of the game," he explained. "The BCCI is looking at exploring new sources of revenue and would soon open itself to product merchandising, ground sponsorship and other licensing as part of its strategy to market the game."
Nike's coup follows the BCCI's tie-up this week with Sahara India group to be the official sponsor of the Indian team for four years at a whopping $70 million.

The difference between live.com and start.com
I've been getting a lot of questions about the difference between live.com and start.com. They are both built by our team and are for the most part the same code base. Start.com is an incubation project that was started to build a new type of portal using dhtml and xmlhttp. The goal was to get a fast, personalized page that felt like an application as opposed to a web page. This technology became known as AJAX (asynchronous javascript and XML). We took the start.com code base and turned it into Live.com. Live.com is the homepage for windows live http://ideas.live.com. The two will most likely diverge a bit in the future. Live.com will be marketed and most likely start.com won't. We'll continue to try things out on start.com from time to time that aren't ready for the mainstream. For the record, live.com is my homepage.
